THICK clouds of dust and dirt filled the air as the 2013 Jamaica Millenium Motoring Club (JMMC) Sprint Championship kicked off last Sunday at Badda Badda Raceway in Richmond, Priory, St. Ann.

Eleven of Jamaica’s fastest sprinters vied for the chance to start the season off in the lead with hopes of taking claiming a the title at year-end. Rally hotshot Joel Jackson, who had been on a break from the sport, cemented his return to the track with a blistering series of runs his Subaru Impreza. Jackson took top honours in the JN8 class, scoring the overall fastest time at the event and the fastest time in the championship run. “It feels pretty good to start the season off so well, we really never expected a win. The main reason we entered the event was so we could test the car for Rally Trinidad coming up in a month so the victory just made it perfect,” Jackson told Auto.

Dave Lee piloted his Mitsubishi Evolution to second-place in the championship run, while Daryl King and his Honda Civic taking third place. Lee also took the second place trophy in JN8 class with Peter Jaggon and his Subaru Impreza taking third.

In the highly contested JA2 class, the heated rivalry among Daryl King, Jordan Powell, and Rallysport Champion Matthew Gore was again in full force. Though his rivals put up a fight, Powell pushed ahead of the pack in his Toyota Corolla FX to emerge victorious. The speedster beat King by milliseconds in the ‘2-lapper’, with Gore and his Toyota Starlet bringing up third. “I’m really happy about the class victory but next time around we’ll be gunning for the championship run,” said Powell.

Sole entrant in the JA3 class Keith Saunders had some impressive dust-filled runs in his Chevrolet Chevette while Rohan Jones represented the JA4 class well in his Hyundai Excel.

Other drivers out for battle included James March, Marvin Porteous and Kenji Lee.
