2012 Season Preview

Reggae Racing looks forward to record season.

Motor sport in Jamaica is on the rise and is making a growing contribution to not only the island’s sports-tourism product but to the local economies of the various cities, towns and villages that the events visit across the island on the way to bringing motorsports excitement and entertainment to every nook and cranny of the green isle, on a “hill and gully” ride of thrilling proportions. Record attendance at 2011 events and a solid calendar for 2012 indicate that the sport is headed in the right direction.

Affiliated to the world governing body of motorsports, Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) is the island’s governing body for motor sport; it also represents the interests of its member clubs in discussions with Government departments which facilitate the sport in the island, in particular the Ministries of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

With the release of the 2012 calendar and reflecting on the 2011 season, it can be seen that despite the prevailing financial climate, interest in motor sport from participants, spectators and advertisers alike continues to rise. As a responsible governing body it is the duty of the JMMC to foster the growth and development of each genre of the sport across the island, spreading its activities through each of the fourteen parishes as much as possible.

The first speed event of the 2012 season will get underway at noon the next day at Jamwest Speedway, Old Hope, Westmoreland, where intense preparation work is already underway, as the club kicks off a packed 2012 calendar with the first of 6 scheduled loose surface timed events. Set on a very fast 1.8 mile course destined to be Jamaica’s next paved circuit, the wide, smooth and totally enjoyable marl surface is being further refined to host the dirt sprint cars entered for the national sprint championship. Admission is adults $1,000.00 and patrons can look forward to an expanded, shaded seating area with a commanding view of the facility, with new competitor paddock areas and the smoothest, widest dirt track surface on the island.

Wet & Slide JMMC/MBMC dexterity #5

Photos by Omar Munroe, Blista Inc and Marlon Chin

The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) brought the curtains down on its 2011 motorsports season when in association with the Montego Bay Motoring Club, they staged a successful Wet & Slide Dexterity #5 at the upscale Whitter Village Shopping Centre in Ironshore, Montego Bay on Tuesday, December 27, 2011.

The event got off to a 5pm start, with 27 competitors taking to the track laid out by clerk of the course Pernell Fitz-Coy. The tarmac surface was properly wet before each of the three single lap runs, with the competitors having a reverse grid for the 2nd run and then drawing numbers for the run order of the third. Before the two lap championship run, a 4×1 team relay was run with a merged Team Challenger/Mad Dem going up against Team Westslide in a best of three format.

Top Spot.

Ivan Lee driving the Team Challenger Garage Toyota Corolla SR5 “Blackbird” copped the fastest time of the event, posting a 1.20.78 in his 3rd run. Ivan had flown in from Mexico specifically for the event, and upset 2011 Overall Dexterity Championship winner Maurice “Worl Boss” Whittingham, the latter placing 2nd ahead of Cleve “Cutta Hype” Ottey in 3rd place.

Ameer Johnson in the Team Mad Dem Racing/Cars Rehab Toyota Corolla Levin rally car won the FWD LSD class ahead on Team Challenger’s Richard Chan in a Toyota Starlet.

Multiple Dexterity class champion Christopher “Teach” MacFarlane again copped the win of the front wheel drive class at the event and also won the class championship for 2011, driving a 2012 Mitsubishi ASX, ahead of Dean “Duct Tape” Corrodus in a Toyota Corolla and Kevin “Bruksport Racing” Watson in the fabric Smart Suzuki Swift GTi.

Garth Chin who hails from Kingston got the better of the Munroe brothers in their year-long battle in the rear wheel drive class. Driving a Mercedes Benz 190e, Chin posted a best time of 1.34.49 to outclass his rivals Shane and Omar who posted best times of  1.40.12 and 1.504.92 in similar Toyota Altezzas.

Championship run.

In the 2 lap championship run, Whittingham redeemed himself and won 1st place with a scorching 2.18.68, followed by team-mate Ameer Johnson in a time of 2.20.18 and Ivan Lee in 3rd place a shade behind in 1.20.85.

Slippery Wen Wett, JMMC Dexterity #4 report & results

The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club continued it’s drive towards conducting multiple motorsports events across the island when they held the fourth installment of the national dexterity championships at Pines Plaza, Junction, St. Elizabeth on Sunday, December 11, bringing motorsports entertainment once again to the speed loving south coast crowd that have made that venue arguably the most popular in recent times.

Made possible with the assistance of Kinkaid’s Cellular, Tyre Warehouse, KFC, Tru Juice, The Automotive Performance Centre Ltd., Scott’s Auto and ATL Automotive, the penultimate event saw all the leading championship contenders competing for overall honors, but there was a surprise in store as out of the blue, the traditional top finishers were all upstaged by a relative newcomer.

Overall victory.
Ameer Johnson, driving the Team mad Dem Toyota Corolla Levin rally car in the front wheel drive with limited slip differential (FWD LSD) class, posted the fastest overall and fastest two wheel drive time of the event in the single lap runs of 1min.00.01 secs, just milliseconds ahead of multiple dexterity champions Christopher “Teach” McFarlane (1.00.04) and Maurice “Whitty” Whittingham (1.00.67) in the front wheel drive (FWD) and rear wheel drive with limited slip differential (RWD LSD) classes respectively.

Rear Wheel Drive with LSD
In this the most populous class that saw 17 competitors entered in the class that displays the most flamboyant and crowd pleasing drivers, 1st place was again the domain of Whittingham as previously mentioned, while 2nd place was taken by veteran Christopher “Chippy” Addison in the immaculately prepared Kinkaid’s Cellular Toyota Corolla SR5, with Cleve “Cutta Hype” Ottey rounding out the top three.

Multiple Champion
Multiple class champion Christopher “Teach” McFarlane was the sole entrant in the front wheel drive class, but notwithstanding the lack of competition, his winning time was good for 2nd overall, proving that the competition in this genre of the sport is really against the clock more than anything or anyone else.

Championship Run.
Accumulating a total points tally now of 72 points with his third place in the two lap championship run, Maurice Whittingham has again wrapped up another overall dexterity championship, having won titles on occasions too many to list here. Upstaging him for the win of this round was McFarlane who posted a winning time of 2 min.02.33 secs. and arch rival Ottey who captured 2nd spot by stopping the clocks at 2 min.03.03secs. to Whittingham’s 2 min.05.65 secs.

The 2011 national dexterity championship series culminates on Tuesday, December 27 at Whitter Village in Ironshore, Montego Bay with the staging of Wet ‘n Slide, the Go green Edition, starting at 3pm.
