Jamaican representative Alex Powell had mixed fortunes in the three Heats of the 14th annual Superkarts! USA SuperNationals currently underway in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Starting from Pole position in Friday’s Heat 1, Alex swapped the lead three times before crossing the line first at the Finish, only for the team to be told that he had been assessed a 5-second penalty for a “Jump Start”. The penalty dropped him to 10th.
Making no such mistake in Heat 2, Alex led the first four laps before briefly dropping to second then reclaiming the lead on the sixth lap; a lead he again held to the Finish, penalty free.
In today’s Heat 3, Alex moved from 5th after lap 1 to 1st on lap 3. Entering the final lap in the lead, the checkered flag seemed to be in sight. John Powell described what happened next “we were leading the last lap, and got pushed from behind and went wide in a hairpin corner which saw him drop from first to fourth, so he finished 4th.”
Alex will start the Final tomorrow in 7th position. “He can still win from starting position #7” said John Powell.
