“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…” appeared to be the approach of Jamaican representative Alex Powell in the WSK Final Cup at the Adria International Raceway yesterday.

Nothing seemed to phase Alex; not the results of the day before, not the rain, not the 10°C temperature, not 10th position on the start grid. When the lights went green signalling the Start of his 10-lap Pre-Final, he methodically set about moving to the front. Racing in tyre spray that dramatically cut visibility, avoiding puddles that sent other karts spinning off track, he also kept clear while racers in front of him chaotically made contact taking themselves out of contention. Using a clean, cautious yet quick approach he gained seven positions to claim 3rd, setting himself up for a 6th position start in the Final.

Conditions were “absolutely terrible” said John Powell “the organization has shortened the Final by two laps because of the conditions”.

Still in the points lead going into the Final, with all of the contenders starting in front of him, Alex repeated his methodical drive. Pole sitter Rashid Al Dhaheri gave away any chances of winning the final and championship when he false started, incurring an insurmountable 10-second penalty. Alex initially gained one position to 5th early in the race but cautiously gave space to other drivers who seemed determined to pass regardless of contact. In the end Alex’s strategy proved to be the correct one. Although crossing the finish line in 6th, a position that cemented his Championship win, he was quickly promoted to 3rd in the race results due to numerous bumper penalties incurred by the other racers. His patience and perseverance were rewarded by a  spot on the Race podium, and the top spot on the Championship podium.

JMMC congratulates Alex for 3rd place in the race and winning the WSK Final Cup Mini Championship.
