The Jamaican flag flew high as Alex Powell capped a fabulous weekend in Kristianstad, Sweden at the third round of the FIA Karting European Championship by winning the event in dominant fashion.
After qualifying 3rd fastest and making the most of good finishing positions in the Heats and Super Heat, Alex started the final on the second row, in 3rd position. He passed his Kart Republic teammate Kean Nakamura-Berta for the lead on the second lap, and was never challenged for the remainder of the 25-lap race.
Alex, the youngest ever to join a Formula 1 junior program with Mercedes AMG F1, is the first Jamaican to win a FIA event outright, building on the legacy of Jamaican drivers like Jeffrey Panton, Douglas Gore, Rory King and Alex’s father John Powell who have all competed in FIA championship events.
The victory moved Alex to third in the FIA Karting European Championship points standings, with one round in Italy to go.
JMMC congratulates Alex for his historic win.
