Among over 1,000 racers present, 143 of the world’s best Mini ROK racers have assembled at South Garda Karting circuit in Italy for the ROK Cup International Finals, representing countries from all over the globe. The event spans four days of intense competition, with the ultimate prize of ROK World Champion waiting to be claimed.

With so many racers the process is brutal; in Mini ROK, racers are divided into 10 groups with 4 heats each, and in order to make it to the Final racers must finish in the top 4 of every heat. Ultimately, only 34 of the 143 will make it to the Final.

Jamaican representative Alex Powell has started his quest in final style by claiming Pole position in qualifying this morning – fastest of all 143 drivers. The commentator has dubbed Alex “the Jamaican sensation” while noting that he is “coming from the other side of the world” to race at the International Finals.

“Today has been an excellent day. At this level, to qualify on Pole is phenomenal.” says John Powell, Alex’s father.

Alex led his first heat until the final lap. An error while trying to protect his position resulted in being passed, finishing in 2nd place.

Reflecting on the race, John Powell said “He covered too much. He still has to realize and have the confidence that he is very very fast, so he doesn’t have to look back.”

Based on his Pole qualifying, Alex will start 1st in each heat. Two heats remain on Friday, with a heat and Final on Saturday. The Mini ROK final will be the last race, highlighting the closing of the event.
