Jamaican representative Alex Powell began his quest for the WSK Final Cup at the Adria International Raceway with a cautious qualifying performance, keeping his eye on the bigger picture of the overall title.

The points leader coming into this weekend’s final round, qualifying in 12°C wet conditions Alex could only manage to post the 16th Overall qualifying time, which set him on for a 6th position start in his first Heat of Group F.

The temperature had dropped to 10°C by the time of his Heat, and Alex methodically moved up toward the front throughout the race. “He was being very cautious in this race” said his father John Powell. Crossing the finish line in 3rd, Alex was promoted to 2nd when Alexander Gubenko received a 5-second penalty. The result meant that Alex has widened his Overall points lead over all racers from 2nd to 9th place in the Mini class points standing.

Alex will have four Heats on Saturday, which will set his grid position for Sunday’s Pre-Final.
